You’ve just finished redesigning your space and it looks awesome! But you’re sitting on your sofa watching TV and you notice something is “off” or even “missing” from your design and you have no idea what it could be. Well…IT’S PLANTS! In my opinion, a touch of greenery in your space will naturally bring your space together. These are the best stylish but low-maintenance plants that will add that designer’s touch!
When I think about what plants to incorporate into a client’s home the first couple of things that come to mind are scale, proportion, and lighting conditions. First I figure out what spots I think the plants should live in, then evaluate the type of look I’m after with the scale, proportion, and volume (visual space) of the plant in mind, then finalize the plant by the lighting conditions needed.
Some clients are already obsessive plant parents BUT most are newbies and really need some guidance in choosing the best plants for their needs.
If you are looking for a sculptural plant with volume or extra fluff in that empty corner, look no further. This is the plant you’ve been looking for. These babies can grow tall with large-scale leaves giving you the height and volume to achieve a major impact in that empty space. With medium to bright indirect sunlight requirements, there is no reason why you can’t have one (or a few) living in your home.
With its grey-green blade-like leaves, the Sayuri’s coloring, shape, and form will complement any décor (if not steal the show) wherever you choose for this special plant baby to live. This snake plant will thrive in bright indirect light, and will even take some direct sunlight. However, if you have a shady corner or a low-light area of your home needing some love, the Sayuri can grow (although a little slower) and be well-adjusted to lower-lit environments. Take it from me, my Sayuri has doubled in size in 1 year living happily in my bathroom which only receives light 18 feet away from the bedroom window. Snake plants, in general, are a great décor piece to use when you are looking for height whether in a small planter on a shelf or looking for some wow factor on a larger scale for that lonely corner.
If patience is your game, then you are in for an absolute treat! But I feel your pain…Sometimes waiting for your plants to flourish into this wonderful piece of art seems endless. Nonetheless, the ZZ will transform into this beautiful wild-looking plant with long stems that seem to fall gracefully over your planter’s edges or sometimes grow more upright. You never know what you’re going to get when you see a new stem popping out of the soil. The ZZ will eventually grow taller, wider, and fluffier given time and a decent amount of bright indirect light. On the other hand, the ZZ plant will also survive in low-lit areas of your home adding those pops of green where you least expect it.
This plant may steal the show and take away the original focal point you had in mind…But who cares! The birds of paradise can grow tall with large foliage (with proper care of course) and really give your space some tropical vibes. The BOP is one of the best plants to accentuate your space’s height and volume. Make sure you provide an abundant amount of light so it can really grow into the showstopper it is meant to be.
A plant made for styling a minimalist interior with a retro ambiance, this plant will create a soft impression with significant impact. Thick glossy dark leaves in a mostly light-colored room will give you the contrast you have been looking for. Paired with the perfect pot to highlight your room’s color scheme and you are golden. For more of a minimalist statement display piece, growing a single stem in a planter will make it look like a piece of art. This plant can live with various lighting conditions from low to bright.
Your shelving unit is never complete without a marble queen pothos…am I right? The top shelves can sometimes look lonely or drab but with the addition of this charmingly colored plant trailing down the highest of shelves you will be the envy of all your plant parent friends. Introducing plants at different heights in your home (especially the higher points) will help fill out negative space that would have stayed empty otherwise. The best part is it visually and purposefully engages your eyes to look around your space at varying heights giving you more opportunities for more plants! My secret to caring for plants at higher than-I-can-reach levels is these self-watering plant spikes. I personally prefer the terracotta ones because I can bury them into the soil and have a cleaner look.
You may already have most if not all of these plants in your home. Give your space a little facelift by re-arranging your plants to suit your decor better… if you have zero plants then start planning the areas where you want to place a plant and the initial plant size you would like to start with. Once you’ve got that, shopping for planters in specific sizes will come much easier.
